Choreographing a Dance...

Choreographing a dance can have many, many rewards.  It is an exciting process that not only requires an incredible amount of creativity, but it also requires time and dedication.  The choreographic process at Helix requires that you follow a process.  This process includes several meetings, Progress Check #1, Progress Check #2, and attendance at all outlined rehearsals and performances.  The meetings, Progress Checks, Rehearsals, and Performances are all MANDATORY components of participating as a Student Choreographer.

Additionally, there is a level of responsibility in becoming a Student Choreographer.  Student Choreographers are responsible for communicating with Mrs. Pipes as well as their dancers.  Choreographers must disseminate information to their dancers, making sure that they are aware of rehearsal schedules, Progress Checks and performance dates.  Student Choreographers MUST be great communicators.

If you are interested in becoming a Student Choreographer, be prepared to work hard, be creative, and learn responsibility through an incredibly rewarding and inspiring process!!

PROGRESS CHECKS

What is a Progress Check?
A Progress Check is similar to an "audition".  This is a time when Mrs. Pipes checks the progress of your piece and decides whether you have developed your ideas enough for them to be ready for performance.  Essentially, she is making sure you are on track, and meeting the necessary deadlines for your piece.  You must make sure that your dancers are prepared for each Progress Check and in order for Mrs. Pipes to view your dance, you the choreographer, AND your dancers MUST be in attendance for your piece to be viewed and adjudicated for participation in the Helix Dance Concert.

Dance Auditions:  See Calendar
  • This is your opportunity to select dancers for your piece
  • I highly suggest selecting people who will be dedicated to your dance, not just friends who you enjoy dancing with
  • One you select dancers, you will need to create a rehearsal schedule to teach your dancers the choreography
  • Rehearsals will take place on your own time, NOT in the dance room yet
  • Stay committed!!

Dance Proposal Due Date:  See Calendar Tab & Slideshow Above
  • See information Below
  • In order to successfully audition a dance for the Winter/Spring Dance Concert, a Proposal MUST be submitted by the date indicated on the calendar.
  • Late submissions will NOT be accepted

Progress Check #1:  See Calendar Tab & Slideshow Above
  • You must show that HALF of your dance is completed
  • Please plan on attending the full length of the rehearsal
  • ALL dancers must be present
  • Any absent dancers will be removed from the piece
  • Once the dance successfully meets the requirements for Progress Check #1, you will be given rehearsal times in the Dance Room

Progress Check #2:  See Calendar Tab & Slideshow Above
  • You must present a FULLY finished dance from beginning to end
  • ALL dancers must know the choreography, you cannot simply explain to me what will happen
  • ALL dancers must be present
  • Any absent dancers will be removed from the piece

Cutting Your Music

  • You must cut your own music and email it to Mrs. Pipes BEFORE Progress Check #2
  • Do this EARLY so you can test your music out in the dance room, it needs to sound smooth
  • Use the Fade Out feature to make sure that your music does not abruptly cut out
  • Transitions need to sound smooth and not distracting
  • These tutorials are starting points BUT you can also use others as they relate to what you are trying to do.  These are introductions

Option:  GarageBand (this is for Mac Users)

Option:  Beautiful Audio Editor (Use on your Chromebook!!!  Integrates well with Google Apps)

Option:  Audacity (this is for PC users...you have to download this though!!!)
